Data Center Optical Engineer
Responsibilities
- Provide break-fix support, including off-hours, nights, and weekends as required
- Perform remote hands services, including installation, testing, and turn-up of data center equipment per MOPs
- Rack, stack, and cable network, server, and optical equipment using hand and power tools
- Install, manage, and troubleshoot Ethernet and fiber cabling (CAT5/6, SM/MM fiber, fan-outs, LC, RJ45)
- Perform optical testing and troubleshooting using power meters, OTDR, VFL, and tools for 10/100G circuits (BERT, RFC2544, EtherSAM, iPerf)
- Support network and optical transport turn-ups, including card-level troubleshooting and hardware replacement
- Validate equipment placement, port assignments, and cabling through site audits and document results
- Decommission hardware safely in accordance with data destruction and compliance procedures
- Replace and troubleshoot faulty routers, switches, servers, and network components
- Manage power infrastructure, including AC/DC systems, power feeds, ATS, and hot/cold aisle environments
- Interpret engineering diagrams, cut-sheets, and vendor documentation for accurate installations
- Supervise and coordinate third-party vendors and on-site contractors
Skills
- 3–5 years of experience in data center operations or a similar technical environment
- Hands-on experience with racking, stacking, cabling, break-fix, and remote hands support
- Strong knowledge of Ethernet, fiber, optical transport, telephony, and IP networking concepts
- Proficiency with optical and network test tools and methodologies for high-speed circuits
- Ability to identify cable types, color codes, and equipment status indicators accurately
- Working knowledge of AC/DC power systems and data center infrastructure best practices
