Coming back to Patterson Companies I demonstrated my knowledge of their tools and was able to threat hunt and find tuning opportunities to reduce the amount of noise present in their SIEM.
I was using database querying and network forensics to identify anomalous alerts and investigate them, creating detailed reports for mitigation or tuning solutions and presented them to my superior.
Patterson also had a Secure Incident Response tool that I used to investigate phishing emails. With a sandbox VM I would gather information about links or attachments in the emails. Using the information along with the proxy, antivirus, and firewall I would define the scope of the incident and determine what mitigating solutions needed to be done.
Through the company’s NextGen AV I performed analysis on script usage to determine potential malicious or benign activity.
Worked through Security Operations ticketing queue to manage and work through various security related incidents, such as the proxy whitelist and blacklist, and drove them to resolution to help ensure that business operations continued.
2018 : 2018
Patterson Companies, Inc.
Information Security Analyst Intern
I took this internship with Patterson Companies after my Freshman year at St. Cloud State. The work during this internship was mostly project based so that I could gain foundational knowledge about the Information Security space and become comfortable with the enterprise security tools used by Patterson.
When I started, the Security Operations team was just beginning the process of migrating its’ branches from an old proxy to a new cloud-based proxy, Zscaler. My first project was to create and update comprehensive spreadsheets related to this migration for my superiors in order to track the progress and identify any branches that lagged behind.
The SecOps department was still in the early stages of tuning their SIEM, QRadar, so my next project was to look into a massive influx in login failure events to identify the source of the problem, using the log source event data in spreadsheets I was able to identify the main source of the events and conclude that they were not malicious.
