The Head of Development is responsible for leading the origination, development, and progression of renewable energy projects from early-stage concept through to ready-to-build.. This role owns the development pipeline and is accountable for land acquisition, permitting, stakeholder engagement, commercial structuring, and internal coordination to deliver high-quality, bankable projects.
Key Responsibilities
Development & Origination
- Lead the identification, evaluation, and development of new renewable energy opportunities, including solar PV, energy storage, wind, and hybrid projects
- Build and manage a robust development pipeline aligned with the company's strategic growth objectives
- Oversee site identification, land acquisition strategies, option agreements, and lease negotiations
- Assess project feasibility, including technical, commercial, environmental, and regulatory considerations
Project Development Management
- Lead projects through the full development lifecycle: concept, feasibility, permitting, grid connection, commercial structuring, and readiness for construction or sale
- Manage planning and permitting processes, working closely with local authorities, consultants, and statutory bodies
- Oversee grid connection applications and coordination with network operators
- Manage development budgets, schedules, risks, and milestones across the portfolio
Commercial & Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead negotiations with landowners, utilities, offtakers, investors, and joint-venture partners
- Support commercial structures including PPAs, route-to-market strategies, and development partnerships
- Act as a senior external representative of the business with stakeholders, communities, and industry bodies
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Build, lead, and mentor the development team, fostering a high-performance and accountable culture
- Work closely with internal teams including engineering, construction, finance, legal, sales, and operations to ensure seamless project progression
- Provide clear reporting on pipeline status, risks, and forecasts to senior leadership
Requirements
- Education:
- A higher degree in a relevant field such as engineering, renewable energy, project management, business, or related areas
- A Master's degree (e.g., in engineering, energy, project management) is preferred
- Professional Experience:
- At least 10 years of experience in project management within the renewable energy sector (including project development, team management, and stakeholder negotiations)
- Experience in roles such as Project Manager, Development Manager or similar positions where the full project development lifecycle was managed
- Proven experience with solar, wind, energy storage, or other renewable energy projects
- Experience working in an international team and collaborating with engineering, legal, and finance teams
- Skills:
- Excellent negotiation skills and stakeholder management (e.g., with landowners, utilities, offtakers, investors)
- Strong project management skills, including knowledge of permitting processes, project feasibility assessments, and contract negotiations
- In-depth knowledge of the renewable energy market, trends, and regulations in the US
- Proficiency with project management and portfolio tracking tools (e.g., MS Project, Excel)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Languages:
- Fluent in English (spoken and written)
- Knowledge of additional languages is a plus (e.g., Spanish, Polish)
