Shape and support the City of Durango’s database infrastructure as our Database Administrator. Working within our Information Technology (IT) Department under the broad supervision of the Business Applications Manager, you’ll maintain the integrity, resiliency, and security of the City’s databases. Your responsibilities will include designing, installing, configuring, and migrating data, as well as monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and fine-tuning databases for optimal performance. You will serve as the technical point of contact for City database users, applications, and third-party support.
In addition to your database administrative duties, you’ll provide data analytical support to customers in collaboration with the IT applications team. You will also provide coverage for team members in system administration and general IT activities.

What You’ll Do in This Role:
- Create and maintain backups, alerts, reports, database integrity checks, and automated jobs.
- Perform backup recovery, clean up files, update stats, and review error logs.
- Monitor, audit, optimize, troubleshoot, and establish baselines using Database Management System (DBMS) tools and applications.
- Plan for DBMS configuration changes, system resources, and workloads.
- Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and manage DBMS and associated databases.
- Manage Microsoft SQL Server security, user accounts, permissions, and user tracking.
- Document configurations, security, activities, maintenance, and operations.
- Research, recommend, and implement new database applications and architectures.
- Create or support creation of reports and analytics based on user needs.
- Assist with building and maintaining a data warehouse system integrating data from distinct systems to support the City’s Business Analyst.
- Assist in developing departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to provide insights and data-driven results.
- Plan and manage data migrations and system integrations.
You Have:
- Bachelor’s degree with coursework in management information systems, database administration, computer science, or a related field.
- Three years of increasingly responsible experience in database systems.
- Ability to maintain local residency within 100 miles of Durango, CO upon hire.
You Will Succeed in This Role If You:
- Bring strong working knowledge of SQL Server, including Management Studio, licensing, and security, with experience in backups, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Have a solid understanding of the .NET environment, web services, and XML open standards.
- Are familiar with network architectures (client/server, internet/intranet, enterprise), LAN/WAN telecommunications, and system security principles.
- Enjoy analyzing data, solving complex problems, and developing logical solutions for computer applications and programming.
- Communicate technical information in a user-friendly way to technical and non-technical users.
- Work well in a collaborative team environment and build positive relationships across the IT team and the organization.
- Are adaptable and eager to learn new technologies and procedures.
