Maintains and supports the computing infrastructure for the University. Administers, installs and troubleshoots hardware, operating systems and related software. Performs systems maintenance tasks, such as system backups, recovery and file maintenance. Schedules, installs, and tests system software upgrades. Perform systems updates for patching, vulnerability management/resolution, Windows workstation image building and requirements gathering. Configures software and resolves technical problems and document. Monitors and maintains infrastructure inventory. Includes on-call duties to support off hours as scheduled or needed.
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is $75,000-80,000.
- Administer computing servers and related equipment.
- Perform operational tasks necessary to create and maintain network file shares, print queues, network user logon accounts and other computing resources
- Install, configure and maintain servers, enterprise storage, virtualization environment and backup systems and other related equipment, along with related operating systems and firmware
- Configure and maintain university network directory services and related software services
- Manage University image builds for Microsoft workstations
- Patching and updates to workstations and servers
- Install, configure and maintain designated server software packages and vendor-provided equipment administration applications
- Implement and maintain procedures or software to enhance and/or automate system administration tasks, including system backups; document programs and procedures; ensure that automated tasks perform correctly
- Monitor and maintain the integrity and security of systems and data
- Monitor, analyze and report on utilization and performance trends with respect to servers, storage systems, virtualization environment and related equipment as directed
- Maintain inventory and documentation of equipment and software, including specifications, configuration, licensing and maintenance information as directed
- Coordinate with external vendors to resolve technical problems as required
- Implement enterprise workstation, server and storage solutions.
- Work with the supervisor to plan, coordinate and implement installation, configuration, and implementation of hardware or software upgrades to the server and storage environments
- Work with the supervisor to implement new and modified systems, including hardware and software
- Integrate server and storage platforms into the existing architecture
- Investigate and report on feasibility of new technology as it pertains to the University's computing environment as directed
- Provide technical support, treating students, faculty, staff as treasured customers.
- Troubleshoot and resolve information technology problems
- Provide technical support for other TS departments and groups, in collaboration with the Service Desk and User Services, as required
- Serve as technical liaison to non-University vendors or technical organizations as directed
- Other administrative duties
- Work independently or in teams to carry out assignments within the framework established by the supervisor and in conformance with established practices and prescribed procedures; bring unexpected or controversial findings to the supervisor’s attention for direction
- Provide regular progress and status reports to the supervisor
- Create and present written or oral briefings as directed, this includes internal Design Reviews
- Participate in interdepartmental TS meetings and project teams as directed
- Participate in Workstation and Server Administration meetings
- Follow University and TS staff guidelines and requirements
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisors. This may include providing guidance to junior members in Operations and Service Desk teams
- Practical Experience
- Associate’s Degree; Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Three years’ systems administration experience with Windows Server 2022 or higher; similar experience with some Linux is a major plus.
- Four years of Windows workstation administration and experience. This can be general to image patching and builds.
- Experience administering Windows 2022 Server or higher in an Active Directory and Configuration Manager environment.
- GPO management and Intune knowledge for migration.
- Required knowledge of, and skill in applying
- IT concepts, principles, methods, and practices with knowledge in IAM; Windows Server 2022/2025 installation, configuration and operation; Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM) configuration and operation Active Directory (incl. Group Policy) configuration and operation;
- Some Programming or scripting languages; Microsoft networking, including network file shares, server-based print queues, remote desktop connection; Local area networking, including IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, other IP services and applications (SFTP, etc.); Enterprise system backup software; and patching/upgrades.
- Working knowledge of Azure or Google Suites.
- Preferred knowledge of, and skill in applying
- Automation of system administration tasks with Windows PowerShell scripting;
- NetApp VMware vSphere 7 or higher;
- Enterprise-class storage area network systems such as NetApp;
- NetApp admin software;
- Veeam enterprise backup software;
- Remote access services (especially Microsoft RDS);
- Linux as a server (especially Red Hat Enterprise or Ubuntu);
- Server deployment technologies.
- Preferred knowledge of/ familiarity with
- Google G Suite for Business;
- Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Microsoft SQL Server 2022 or higher;
- Microsoft Visio or Google Draw.
- One or more of the following certifications is highly desirable
- Microsoft certification for Windows (AZ-900 or better, MCSA, MCSE, Certified Master, Certified Architect).
- VMware certification (VCP, VCAP).
- AWS certification.
- Storage certification (Netapp, EMCST, EMCDCA, EMCSA).
- Red Hat Linux certification (RHCE, RHCT).
- Analytical skills ability to integrate different bodies of knowledge in troubleshooting and solving technical problems.
- Organizational skills ability to organize work, coordinate with other team members to accomplish goals, and ensure progress is made on assigned tasks.
- Good oral and written communication skills ability to express information to individuals or groups effectively, and to make clear, comprehensible oral and written reports.
- Technology awareness knowledge of developments and new applications of server and computing technology and their applications to university academic and administrative processes.
