Technology Officer — Own the Tech Stack at a $1.5B Investment Firm

Alternative Strategy Advisers (ASA) is a boutique fixed income investment management firm with over $1.5 billion in assets under management. Founded by principals from Cargill's proprietary fixed income desk, we've been quietly and profitably managing portfolios of municipal bonds, corporate bonds, treasuries, and private loans for decades.
Our CTO is retiring, and we're looking for the person who will own our entire technology infrastructure. This isn't a cog-in-the-machine role—it's the machine.
THE ROLE
You'll be the sole technologist at a profitable, four-person firm where your work directly drives investment decisions. No layers of management. No ticketing systems. No waiting for approval.
Here's what you'll actually do:
• Design and optimize Azure SQL databases that store portfolio data, market feeds, and analytics. You'll build schemas, write stored procedures, tune queries, and keep everything running fast.
• Build Power BI dashboards and reports that our investment team relies on every morning. You'll create semantic models, write DAX measures, and transform raw data into clear insights using Power Query.
• Manage our Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud environment—identity, security, cost management, and keeping the lights on for a lean team.
• Use AI tools (Claude, Copilot, Cursor) as part of your daily workflow. We don't just allow AI here—we actively encourage it. If you can build a stored procedure twice as fast with an AI assistant, we want to see that.
• Be the person who sees a problem and fixes it before anyone asks. In a four-person firm, there's no help desk to call. You are the help desk, the DBA, the BI developer, the cloud admin, and the innovator.
WHAT YOU NEED
• Strong SQL skills: designing normalized databases, writing complex queries with CTEs and window functions, building stored procedures, and troubleshooting performance issues.
• Power BI experience: semantic models, DAX, Power Query/M transformations, and reports that people actually use.
• Azure cloud fundamentals: Azure SQL, resource management, and cost control.
• A self-directed work ethic: you don't wait for someone to assign you tasks. You see what needs doing and you do it.
BONUS POINTS FOR
• AI tool fluency—you already use Claude, Copilot, Cursor, or similar tools and can talk about how they make you more productive. • Python or PowerShell scripting for automation and data processing. • Awareness of Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, or OneLake—even if hands-on experience is still developing. • Financial services exposure—if you know what a CUSIP is or have worked with bond data, that's a real advantage. But we'll teach the right person. • Microsoft certifications like DP-203, PL-300, or AZ-900—helpful signals, not hard requirements.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• $100,000–$145,000 base salary depending on experience • 10–20% annual discretionary bonus • Health insurance • 401(k) retirement plan • Competitive PTO • Fully remote with flexible schedule
ABOUT YOU
You probably have 3–8 years of experience in the Microsoft data platform, but we care more about what you can do than how long you've been doing it. You're the kind of person who tinkers with new tools on weekends, who has opinions about database design, and who gets a quiet thrill from making a query run 10x faster.
You communicate clearly with people who aren't technical. You don't need to be asked twice to solve a problem. And you're excited—not nervous—about working in a small firm where you're the go-to person for everything technology.
